The Agro climatic condition of Assam is congenial for rubber plantation. At present rubber cultivation has gained its popularity as it is projected as an eco-friendly activity & substitute to jhum cultivation and therefore the are under cultivation has grown from 1.35 lakh hectares in 2003-04 to 2.10 lakh hectares in 2008-09 which was around 55 present higher than that of the area under rubber cultivation in 2003-04. The production of rubber also has doubly increased during the said period. Considering the growth of plantation areas and rubber production trends, there is vast potential for setting up of rubber industries in the State. The Dunlop Tyre Ltd is coming forward for setting up industries at Chaygaon Industrial Growth Centre at Chatabari, Kamrup District.
The growth of coverage of the rubber plantation area as well as production in the State is given in table below.
