Meghalaya is extremely rich in thermal power potential. It has vast coal reserves. This coal reserves is having calorific value with law Ash content but high in Sulphur content, which is suitable for setting up Thermal power projects. Meghalaya is one of the few states in the country with a surplus capacity of power generation. State has a potential about 3000MW. The excess power generated in the state is being sold to neighbouring states. At present, Meghalaya under the state sector has a total of five installed projects (all hydro) with installed capacity of 186.7 MW. Against the total installed capacity, the peak requirement is 114.72 MW. At present, there is no shortage of power in Meghalaya.
But, in view of the proposed industrialisation of the state and also for the Industrial Development of North-Eastern region. Meghalaya Government and North-Eastern Council has taken several steps to develop Thermal as well as Hydro Power Generating stations in Meghalaya. Accordingly to meet the requirement, 84MW has been proposed under the state plan.
