|
Like most other North-Eastern State, Meghalaya is dependent on wood and wood based Industries to a large extent. The mining sector also contributes significantly to the State's income. Private entrepreneurs on small scale also carry it out. Most of the private entrepreneurs who have coal and limestone deposits in their land holdings, extracts the minerals and sent to Assam and Bangladesh for sale . Thus in the absence of down stream industries in Meghalaya little value addition takes place important industries in the State are confined to the manufacture of cement, lime mini steel plants Granite cutting and polishing and so on. Almost all of them are of medium scale industry. Other small scale industries are tailoring, wooden furniture making cane and bamboo works, flour and rice mills, weaving, bakery.
