The state of Mizoram is the smallest state of NER in terms of population, i.e. 8.89 lakh as per 2001 census. It has a geographical area of 21,081 sq.km. It is the second most literate state in the country after Kerala with the literacy rate 88.80% as per 2001 census. It is a predominantly hilly state. Mizoram is divided into 8 districts viz, Aizwal, Lunglei, Saiha, Champhai, Mamit, Lawngtlai and Serchip.
►POPULATION:
In terms of population, Mizoram is the smallest state among NER of India. Decadal growth rate of population falls to 28.82 in the decade 1991-2001 from 39.70 in 1981-1991. Following tables show the characteristics of population of Mizoram.

►AGRICULTURE:
Agriculture occupies a very important place in the economy of Mizoram. As per Economic Classification of Workers 2001 census, about 60% of the total workers are engaged in Agricultural and allied sector.

►SERICULTURE:
The topography of Mizoram enjoys varied climate conditions which facilitates the successful introduction of Mulberry, Eri, Muga and Tasar. The total no. of farmers engaged in sericulture activities during 2009-10 was 7293. The production of raw silk during 2000-01 was reported to be 2064.88 kg.

►POWER:
The degree of economic growth is correlated with the generation and consumption of electricity. Although Mizoram is possessing a vast hydel potential, the progress in this sector is still very slow. In Mizoram, power is generated by only two types,- Hydel and Diesel. Following table shows the installed capacity and power generated in Mizoram.

►BANKING:
As on March 31, 2010, the number of scheduled commercial bank branches in Mizoram was 113 up from 79 as on March 31, 2000. The CDR was 50.43 % as on March 31, 2010

►HEALTH:
